Overview
Spedra is a prescription-only medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. Its active ingredient is avanafil, which belongs to a group of medicines known as PDE5 inhibitors — the same family as sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis).
Spedra is one of the fastest-acting ED treatments currently available. When taken on an empty stomach, it can begin working in as little as 15 minutes.
It is available in three strengths — 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg — allowing your prescriber to recommend the dose best suited to your needs.
Spedra is a prescription-only medicine (POM). It can only be supplied after an online clinical assessment has been reviewed and approved by a prescriber.
How Spedra Works
Like other PDE5 inhibitors, Spedra:
- Blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5)
- Supports the natural process of arousal by improving blood flow
- Requires sexual stimulation to be effective — it will not cause an erection on its own

How Spedra Works
Spedra works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing increased blood flow when you are sexually aroused. This helps you achieve and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity.
Like other PDE5 inhibitors, Spedra:
- Blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5)
- Supports the natural process of arousal by improving blood flow
- Requires sexual stimulation to be effective — it will not cause an erection on its own
Spedra does not increase sexual desire. Without arousal and normal foreplay, the effects of the tablet will simply wear off over a few hours.
How to Take Spedra
Strengths available:
50mg, 100mg, 200mg tablets.
Dosage guidance
- The usual starting dose is 100mg, taken approximately 15–30 minutes before sexual activity.
- This may be adjusted to 50mg (if the starting dose is highly effective) or 200mg (if the starting dose provides unsatisfactory results).
- Swallow the tablet whole with water.
- Do not take more than one tablet in any 24-hour period.
- Do not take Spedra within 24 hours of another ED medication.
- Effects may begin within 15–30 minutes for the 100mg and 200mg strengths, or around 30 minutes for the 50mg strength.
- Spedra typically remains active for around 4–6 hours.
- Sexual stimulation is required for the treatment to work.
Food and alcohol
- Spedra can be taken with or without food, but it works fastest on an empty stomach.
- If taken after a meal, absorption may be delayed by up to 90 minutes or more.
- Alcohol can reduce the ability to achieve an erection and may increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness and low blood pressure.
