Chlamydia Home Test Kit

A discreet at-home urine test to check for chlamydia – with confidential UK lab results within 72 hours.
Clear

Overview

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is spread through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

Many men with chlamydia experience no symptoms at all - around 50% of male infections are completely symptomless. Left untreated, chlamydia can lead to complications including epididymitis (painful swelling of the tubes near the testicles), reactive arthritis, and reduced fertility.

The vivamen Chlamydia Home Test Kit allows you to test yourself discreetly from home. The kit includes everything you need to collect a urine sample and post it to our accredited UK partner laboratory using the prepaid envelope provided.

Why get tested for chlamydia

Because chlamydia is frequently symptomless, regular testing is the most reliable way to detect an infection early. You should consider testing if you:

  • Have had unprotected sex with a new or casual partner
  • Have been told by a sexual partner that they have tested positive
  • Have symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain when urinating, or testicular discomfort
  • Have recently changed sexual partners
  • Are sexually active and have not been tested in the past 12 months

Anyone who is sexually active should consider a chlamydia test at least once a year, or more frequently if changing partners regularly.

You should wait at least 2 weeks after unprotected sex before testing, as the infection may not be detectable earlier than this.

Each Chlamydia Home Test Kit contains:

  • A sterile sample collection bottle
  • An absorbent pad
  • A secure outer container
  • A prepaid Freepost return envelope
  • Full step-by-step instructions

No additional equipment is needed.

The chlamydia test for men uses a urine sample, ideally collected from the first time you urinate in the morning.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water and dry them.
  2. Unpack the test kit on a clean surface, ideally in a bathroom.
  3. Remove the cap from the sample collection bottle.
  4. Urinate into the small sample bottle  – aim to catch the first flow of urine.
  5. Secure the cap tightly on the sample bottle.
  6. Place the smaller bottle into the larger outer container along with the absorbent pad.
  7. Wash your hands again before attaching the label with your details to the container.
  8. Place the sealed container into the prepaid Freepost envelope.
  9. Post your sample in any UK post box as soon as possible for the most accurate results.

Samples should be posted on the same day they are collected wherever possible.

How accurate is the test

At-home chlamydia urine tests use the same NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) technology used in sexual health services. Clinical studies have shown that self-collected samples are equally as accurate as those collected by a healthcare professional.

To help ensure the most accurate result:

  • Collect the first flow of urine from your first morning urination
  • Wait at least 2 weeks after unprotected sex before testing
  • Follow the collection instructions carefully
  • Post your sample promptly after collection

No test is 100% accurate, but following the instructions correctly significantly reduces the chance of a false result.

Once our partner laboratory receives your sample, results are typically available within 72 hours. Results are delivered securely to your vivamen patient account – we will never send results by text message or post.
Negative result

A negative result means that no chlamydia infection was found in your sample at the time of testing.

No follow-up test is required unless you develop symptoms or have further unprotected sexual contact.

Positive result

A positive result means chlamydia has been detected. A member of our clinical team will contact you through your patient account with guidance on next steps, including treatment options.

Chlamydia is straightforward to treat. The standard treatment is a course of antibiotics, typically doxycycline taken for 7 days. Treatment is highly effective when taken as directed.

It is important to avoid sexual contact until you and any partners have completed treatment, to prevent reinfection.

Many men with chlamydia notice no symptoms at all. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • White, cloudy, or watery discharge from the tip of the penis
  • A burning or stinging sensation when urinating
  • Itching or irritation around the opening of the urethra
  • Pain or swelling in one or both testicles

Symptoms can appear 1 to 3 weeks after infection, but may take longer or not appear at all. Testing is the only reliable way to know your status.

What happens if chlamydia is left untreated
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to:
  • Epididymitis — a painful infection of the tubes that carry sperm, which can affect fertility
  • Reactive arthritis — joint pain and swelling triggered by the infection
  • Increased risk of transmitting the infection to sexual partners
Early detection through testing is the simplest way to avoid these complications.
