Overview
Finasteride is a prescription-only medicine commonly used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).
It works by reducing levels of DHT, a hormone that contributes to hair follicle shrinkage over time. For many men, this can help slow or stop further hair loss when taken consistently.
Finasteride is only supplied following an online consultation and review by a UK-registered prescriber.

How it Works
Finasteride targets the underlying hormonal cause of male pattern hair loss.
It blocks an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which reduces the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Lower DHT levels help protect hair follicles from further thinning.
Consistent use is required to maintain any benefit.
How to Take
Dose offered
Finasteride 1mg tablet.
How to Take
- Take one tablet once daily, with or without food.
- Try to take it at the same time each day.
What to expect
- Hair loss progression may slow after around 3–6 months.
- A full assessment of effect usually takes 6–12 months.
- If treatment is stopped, any benefit is typically lost gradually.
Safety and Side Effects
Like all medicines, finasteride can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
Common side effects may include:
- Reduced libido
- Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection
- Reduced volume of ejaculate
Important Information
- Not suitable for women
- Not recommended for men under 18
- Tablets should not be handled by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant
- Suitability is assessed during the consultation
