Gonorrhoea Home Test Kit

A discreet at-home urine test to check for gonorrhoea — with confidential UK lab results within 72 hours.

Clear

Overview

Gonorrhoea is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK, after chlamydia. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is spread through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

While gonorrhoea is more likely to cause noticeable symptoms than some other STIs, many men experience no symptoms at all - meaning the infection can go undetected and be passed on unknowingly. Left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to serious complications including epididymitis (painful inflammation of the tubes near the testicles) and, in rare cases, reduced fertility.

The vivamen Gonorrhoea Home Test Kit allows you to test yourself discreetly from home. The kit includes everything you need to collect a urine sample and post it to our accredited UK partner laboratory using the prepaid envelope provided.

This is not a prescription product. No clinical consultation is required to order a test kit.

Why get tested for gonorrhoea

Regular testing is the most reliable way to detect gonorrhoea, particularly if you are not experiencing symptoms. You should consider testing if you:

  • Have had unprotected sex with a new or casual partner
  • Have been told by a sexual partner that they have tested positive for gonorrhoea
  • Have symptoms such as unusual discharge from the penis or pain when urinating
  • Have recently changed sexual partners
  • Are sexually active and have not been tested in the past 12 months

If you change partners regularly, testing every 3 months is recommended. At minimum, anyone sexually active should test at least once a year.

You should wait at least 2 weeks after unprotected sex before testing, as the infection may not be detectable earlier than this.

Each Gonorrhoea Home Test Kit contains:

  • A sterile urine sample collection bottle
  • An absorbent pad
  • A secure outer container
  • A prepaid Freepost return envelope
  • Full step-by-step instructions

No additional equipment is needed.

The gonorrhoea test for men uses a urine sample, ideally collected from the first time you urinate in the morning.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water and dry them.
  2. Unpack the test kit on a clean surface, ideally in a bathroom.
  3. Remove the cap from the sample collection bottle.
  4. Urinate into the small sample bottle — aim to catch the first flow of urine.
  5. Secure the cap tightly on the sample bottle.
  6. Place the smaller bottle into the larger outer container along with the absorbent pad.
  7. Wash your hands again before attaching the label with your details to the container.
  8. Place the sealed container into the prepaid Freepost envelope.
  9. Post your sample in any UK post box as soon as possible for the most accurate results.

Samples should be posted on the same day they are collected wherever possible.

How accurate is the test

At-home gonorrhoea urine tests use NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) technology — the same method used in sexual health clinics. Clinical studies have shown that self-collected urine samples are highly accurate for detecting genital gonorrhoea in men.

To help ensure the most accurate result:

  • Collect the first flow of urine from your first morning urination
  • Wait at least 2 weeks after unprotected sex before testing
  • Follow the collection instructions carefully
  • Post your sample promptly after collection

No test is 100% accurate, but following the instructions correctly significantly reduces the chance of a false result. If you are experiencing symptoms, you should also consider visiting a sexual health clinic for a physical examination.

Once our partner laboratory receives your sample, results are typically available within 72 hours. Results are delivered securely to your vivamen patient account – we will never send results by text message or post.
Negative result

A negative result means that no gonorrhoea infection was found in your sample at the time of testing.

No follow-up test is required unless you develop symptoms or have further unprotected sexual contact.

Positive result

A positive result means gonorrhoea has been detected. A member of our clinical team will contact you through your patient account with guidance on next steps.

Gonorrhoea is treated with antibiotics  –  typically a single antibiotic injection administered at a sexual health clinic or GP surgery. Our clinical team will help you access treatment locally.

It is important to avoid sexual contact until you and any partners have completed treatment and been given the all-clear by a clinician.

You should also inform any sexual partners from the past 6 months so they can be tested and treated if needed.

Some men with gonorrhoea do experience symptoms, though not all. When symptoms do appear, they typically develop within 2 weeks of infection and may include:

  • An unusual discharge from the tip of the penis — often white, yellow, or green
  • A burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Pain or tenderness in the testicles
  • In some cases, inflammation or swelling around the foreskin

Symptoms of gonorrhoea tend to be more noticeable than those of chlamydia, but a significant number of infections remain symptomless. Testing is the only reliable way to confirm your status.

What happens if gonorrhoea is left untreated
If left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to:
  • Epididymitis — a painful infection of the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles, which can affect fertility if not treated
  • Reactive arthritis — joint pain, eye inflammation, and urinary problems triggered by the infection
  • Increased risk of contracting or transmitting other STIs, including HIV
  • In rare cases, disseminated gonococcal infection — where the bacteria spread to the blood, joints, or other parts of the body
Early detection through testing is the simplest way to avoid these complications.

Patient Information Leaflet

Gonorrhoea is passed from one person to another through unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex. It can also be spread by sharing sex toys that have not been washed or covered with a new condom between uses.

You cannot catch gonorrhoea from kissing, hugging, sharing towels, swimming pools, or toilet seats. The bacteria cannot survive outside the body for long.

Using condoms consistently and correctly is the most effective way to reduce your risk of gonorrhoea and other STIs.
