Overview
Oral minoxidil is a prescription-only medicine that may be used to support hair growth in some men with hair loss.
Minoxidil was originally developed to treat high blood pressure, but at much lower doses it is sometimes prescribed to help stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. Oral minoxidil is typically considered when topical treatments are not suitable or have not been effective.
Minoxidil tablets are only supplied following an online consultation and review by a UK-registered prescriber.

How it Works
Minoxidil works by improving blood flow to hair follicles and helping to extend the growth phase of the hair cycle.
This may help:
- Stimulate dormant hair follicles
- Support thicker or more consistent hair growth
- Slow further thinning in some men
Results vary, and ongoing use is required to maintain any benefit.
How to Take
Dose offered
Low-dose oral minoxidil tablets (dose determined by the prescriber).
How to Take
- Take one tablet once daily, as prescribed.
- Take it at the same time each day.
What to expect
- Shedding may occur early on as part of the hair growth cycle.
- Changes are usually assessed after 3–6 months.
- Any Benefit is Typically lost gradually if treatment is stopped.
Safety and Side Effects
Oral minoxidil can cause side effects and is not suitable for everyone.
Common side effects may include:
- Increased body or facial hair
- Mild fluid retention
- Headache or dizziness
Important Information
- Originally a blood pressure medicine — suitability must be assessed carefully
- Not suitable for everyone
- Extra caution is needed in men with heart or blood pressure conditions
- Your medical history is reviewed as part of the consultation

It may be considered when topical treatments are not suitable or have not worked well.
Most men need at least 3–6 months of consistent use before assessing results.
It can be safe for some men at low doses, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. A clinician will assess this during your consultation.
