Mounjaro KwikPen

A prescription-only injectable treatment used to support weight loss in adults with obesity or weight-related health risks, when clinically appropriate.

Overview

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection containing tirzepatide, a medicine that helps regulate appetite and food intake. It is commonly considered for adults who meet clinical criteria for medical weight management and have not achieved sufficient results with lifestyle changes alone.

Supply of Mounjaro is subject to an online assessment and video consultation, with approval by a UK-registered prescriber. Treatment is not suitable for everyone and is only supplied when considered safe and appropriate.

How it Works

Mounjaro acts on hormones involved in appetite regulation and blood sugar control.

It works by:

  • Mimicking hormones that help control hunger
  • Increasing feelings of fullness after eating
  • Reducing appetite and calorie intake over time

These effects can make it easier to maintain dietary changes and support gradual weight loss when combined with lifestyle adjustments.

  • Form: Pre-filled KwikPen for self-injection
  • Frequency: Once weekly, on the same day each week
  • Dosage and treatment plan: Treatment begins at a low starting dose to help reduce side effects.
    • Starting dose: 2.5 mg once weekly
    • Dose increases are introduced gradually
    • Dose progression depends on tolerability and clinical review
    • Not everyone will reach the same dose. Your prescriber will review progress and side effects before recommending any change
    • If treatment is stopped, appetite may gradually return. Continued use is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains appropriate.

Mounjaro pens include manufacturer instructions — read these fully before your first dose. If you’re unsure at any point, seek advice before injecting.

  1. Check the pen
Remove the pen from the packaging and check the expiry date and that the medicine looks as expected.
  2. Choose and prepare the injection site
Pick an area of stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Make sure the skin is clean and dry and not sore, bruised, or irritated.
  3. Prepare the pen
Remove the pen cap. Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and allow it to dry.
  4. Attach a new needle
Use a fresh needle each time to reduce infection risk and avoid blocked needles. Push the needle straight on and twist until secure.
  5. Remove the needle shields
Remove the outer needle cap and keep it (you’ll need it for safe removal later). Remove the inner needle cover.
  6. Inject the dose
Hold the pen firmly against your skin at a 90-degree angle. Press the button to deliver the dose and keep the pen steady.
  7. Hold briefly, then remove
Keep the pen in place briefly to ensure the dose is delivered, then remove it from the skin.
  8. Dispose of the needle safely
Re-cap the needle using the outer cap, remove it from the pen, and dispose of it in a sharps container (or follow the disposal instructions you’ve been given).
Avoid injecting into the same exact spot each week — rotating sites helps reduce irritation.
What to expect

Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects. These are most common when starting treatment or increasing the dose.

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Reduced appetite
  • Stomach discomfort
