Overview
Regaine 5% Extra Strength Scalp Solution is a well-established treatment for hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men. It contains minoxidil 5% as its active ingredient and is applied directly to the scalp.
It is designed for men aged 18–65 who are experiencing gradual thinning or early-stage hair loss. Regaine works best when hair loss is recent or moderate — such as thinning on the crown or small areas of loss.
Regaine does not require a prescription. At Vivamen, we offer a short hair loss assessment to help ensure it's a suitable option for you.

How it Works
Minoxidil, the active ingredient in Regaine, helps increase blood flow to the hair follicles and encourages them to remain in the active growth phase for longer.
This can help:
- Stimulate weakened hair follicles
- Support thicker, stronger-looking hair over time
- Slow or stabilise further hair loss
- Clinical studies have shown that Regaine stabilises hair loss in around 8 out of 10 men and encourages regrowth in approximately 3 out of 5.
Consistent, ongoing use is needed to maintain any benefit.
How to Use it
Strengths available
Minoxidil 5% solution.
How to Apply
- Make sure the scalp is clean and dry before application.
- Apply 1ml of solution directly to the affected area(s) of the scalp using the applicator provided.
- Use twice daily — once in the morning and once in the evening.
- Gently massage the solution into the scalp.
- Allow at least 12 hours between applications.
- Let the solution dry fully before styling or going to bed.
What to expect
- Some temporary shedding may occur in the first few weeks — this is normal and usually settles. Soft, fine hair growth may be noticed from around 8 weeks, but most men should allow 12–16 weeks to assess results.
- One bottle typically lasts around one month.
- If treatment is stopped, any benefit is usually lost gradually over time.
- If no improvement is seen after 12 months of consistent use, consider discontinuing and speaking with a pharmacist.
Safety and Side Effects
Regaine is generally well tolerated, but side effects can occur.
Common side effects may include:
- Scalp irritation, itching, or dryness
- Headache (may affect up to 1 in 10 users)
- Unwanted hair growth in areas where the solution accidentally spreads
Important Information
- For external use only, do not apply to other parts of the body
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or broken skin
- Wash hands thoroughly after application
- Not suitable for hair loss caused by conditions other than hereditary hair loss
- Suitable for men aged 18–65
- Do not use more than the recommended amount, using extra will not speed up results
