How Wegovy Works

Wegovy mimics a naturally occurring hormone involved in appetite regulation.

It may help by:

  • Acting on areas of the brain that control hunger
  • Increasing feelings of fullness after meals
  • Reducing appetite and overall calorie intake

These effects can support gradual, sustainable weight loss when combined with realistic lifestyle changes.

Wegovy is supplied as a single-use, pre-filled FlexTouch pen for injection under the skin (subcutaneous use). It is taken once weekly.

  • You can inject on any day of the week
  • Try to keep to the same day each week
  • Wegovy can be taken with or without food
  • Injection sites include the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Sites should be rotated each week to reduce skin irritation.

Watch the manufacturer’s guide to learn more about using Wegovy: https://www.wegovy.co.uk/support-materials.html#video

Each pen includes full manufacturer instructions, which should be read carefully before first use. In general, weekly use involves:

  1. Check and prepare
Confirm the pen is in date and at the correct dose. Wash your hands and choose a clean, dry area of skin.
  2. Attach a new needle
Screw on a fresh needle and remove the protective caps. A new needle must be used for each injection.
  3. Administer the dose
Hold the pen firmly against the skin and press the injection button. Keep the pen in place briefly to ensure the full dose is delivered.
  4. Dispose safely
Remove the needle and place it in a sharps container or follow the disposal guidance provided.

If you are unsure about injection technique at any point, seek advice before continuing treatment.

Dosage and Dose Progression
Wegovy treatment follows a gradual dose-increase schedule to help your body adjust and reduce side effects.

Typical Dosing schedule

(May vary depending on clinical judgement)
  • Continue 2.4 mg, or
  • Increase to 7.2 mg if advised by your clinician

Some people remain on 2.4 mg long-term if they are seeing good results and tolerating treatment well. Not everyone will progress to the highest dose.

If Wegovy is stopped, appetite may gradually return. Continued use is reviewed regularly to ensure treatment remains appropriate.

Like all medicines, Wegovy can cause side effects, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose.

Common side effects include:

Wegovy is not suitable for everyone and may not be appropriate if you have certain gastrointestinal, endocrine, or thyroid conditions, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
